Hair Serums 101

In a world where hair problems like frizz, dryness, dullness and damage are all too common, finding the right solution can be a huge game changer, enter - hair serums!

Hair serums come packed with multitasking benefits, unlike traditional hair oils which take quite some time to show results and can make your hair look greasy and weigh them down. Hair serum is a silicone-based product designed to coat the hair’s surface to help impart added shine, smoothness and hydration, protect against humidity and pollution and provide heat protection. Hair serums also tend to be a much quicker solution and are lighter in consistency than hair oils and work instantly to give you frizz-free, sleek and shiny hair. From hair styling to heat protection and protection from UV damage, Hair serums are a must have product in your hair care routine.

Selecting the correct type of hair serum however, is very important for your type of hair and the results you are looking for as even a great product will not work if used incorrectly or if used on the wrong type of hair and can make it go from looking perfectly glass hair to seriously gross hair!

The key to getting the most out of your hair serum is learning how to use it properly. Let us tell you how to get the most out of your hair serum:

    1. Less is More: The first rule for hair serums is that a little bit goes a long way. You can always apply more, but you won't be able to remove excess serum without washing your hair. Over-applying a serum can make your hair look greasy and dull. If your hair is fine or short, start with a pea-sized amount at first, For normal mid-length hair take 1 pump of serum and about 1-2 pumps for longer, thicker unruly hair. Rub the serum in your palms and evenly distribute it through damp towel dried hair.
    2. Always apply on freshly washed hair: In order for your serum to work to its maximum potential, it should always be used on clean and freshly washed hair. In this way, it can act as a shield against dirt and dust. It’s best to apply the serum to damp towel dried hair before applying the rest of your styling products to lock in the moisture and all its benefits.
    3. Avoid applying on the scalp: As a rule of thumb while applying hair serum, make sure you don’t massage it into your scalp unless it is a scalp serum or it will make your hair look greasy and flat and add to layers of product buildup on the scalp. Hair serum should always be applied from the mid-lengths towards the ends of the hair. Use a paddle brush to spread the serum evenly in your hair and detangle it.
    4. Control Flyaways: Let your serum work double-duty by using it to tame flyaways. After you have styled your hair simply take 1 or 2 drops of serum, rub it and gently apply it to the strands in light handed motion wherever you want to control the frizz. Just be careful not to apply the serum directly on your scalp to avoid oily and messy roots.
    5. Say no to chemicals but yes to actives: Take a cue from how we designed our serums and always look for natural and paraben-free ingredients that are specifically designed for your hair needs and won’t cause any damage to your hair in the long run. If you have colored or chemically treated hair, then opt for a hair serum with active ingredients like amino acids, peptides and natural botanical ingredients that will help in breathing new life to your hair not just superficially but on a molecular level. This will also help your color look more vibrant and reduce the damage from chemically processed hair.
    6. Choosing the correct serum type: If you use a lot of styling tools like curling or flat irons regularly, or your hair feels fried from the environmental factor and sun, then give it some extra dose of moisture and nourishment in the form of Hair serums. Check for serums with ingredients that are moisturizing like argan and olive oil extracts. Those with oily hair should go for lighter serums and look for ingredients like coconut and jojoba oil extract in their hair serum. For thicker and curly unruly hair look for a curl or texture defining hair serum that will bring out and enhance your natural curl pattern.

It is important to know that as we age, our bodies have a more challenging time absorbing nutrients from the foods we eat. Whenever we have a nutritional deficiency, our hair is the first to experience the effects. Environmental factors, constant styling, heat, pollution and age play a key factor in maintaining hair health and just like the hair on your scalp, your eyebrow and eyelash hair also need some regular care and nourishment.
