Under 10-minutes simple, effective nighttime skincare routine
In a world that never stops moving, finding time for a dedicated nighttime skincare routine feels like a luxury. But, we’ve got you ladies - wash away the day and nourish your skin with our simple but effective nighttime skincare routine!*
Nighttime is when the skin (along with the rest of the body) shifts into repair and restore mode, so making the most of the time you spend asleep is a simple way to encourage healthier, glowing skin come morning. Consistency is key - so try not to skip a night!
*If you are unsure which products to use for your skin type, we recommend discussing a tailored skincare routine with a dermatologist.
Step 1: Remove makeup and SPF
Begin by removing any makeup and SPF - we recommend a gentle, non-foaming cleanser for this step, such as a cleansing balm or micellar water. You can also use an oil-based makeup remover with cotton rounds if you wear waterproof makeup.
Step 2: Cleanse
Whether you wear make-up or not, cleansing away the day’s accumulated pollution is key for healthy skin. No matter your skin type, reach for a gentle cleanser (that won't strip your skin of natural oil and disrupt your skin's microbiome) and make sure to spend a good minute lathering the cleanser and working it onto your skin.
Sensitive and dry skin types should look for a hydrating creamy cleanser, while oily and acne-prone skin types can opt for a gentle foam or gel cleanser.
Step 2.5: Tone (optional)
A toner is a water-based product meant to rebalance your skin’s pH level, gently augment exfoliation and barrier repair or serve as an anti-inflammatory — depending on the ingredients they contain. Toners are not necessary for everyone, but they can offer additional benefits if you have a specific skin concern to target.
Use a toner 3x-4x a week which is suitable for your skin type.
Step 3: Treatment product/Serum
Allow your toner (if using) to set for about 1 minute, then apply a treatment product/serum. This part of the routine allows for the most personalization because it targets your specific skincare goals.
Here, you can determine whether you want to focus on anti-aging, brightening, acne reduction, or dark spot minimizing. Because this product contains an active ingredient, it’s important to only apply one per night. You can change the product you use every other night (or every few nights) depending on your needs. Some common treatment products are retinoids, alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) (also known as salicylic acid).
If you are using a pimple spot cream or any other spot cream then apply after moisturizer so that the spot cream does not spread.
(If this treatment step feels overwhelming or unimportant to you, skip it for now and then work it into your routine later if you so desire.)
Step 4: Lock that moisture
Every skin type should end their evening skincare routine with moisturizer. We recommend a skin barrier–repairing and hydrating moisturizer to help rejuvenate the health of the skin. Acne-prone and oily skin types - which absolutely need moisture, too - should opt for a water-based gel moisturizer.
If you skip this step, your skin might feel tight and dry, unable to reap the benefits of a good night's sleep for your skin.
Use a pimple spot cream or any other spot cream on top of moisturized skin.
Tip : During cooler weather use an overnight mask or hydrating sheet mask 2x a week for an extra boost of hydration in place of moisturizer
Step 4.5: Lip Balm/Mask (optional)
Incorporating this quick step in your daily nighttime routine smooths the lips and gives them a healthy appearance. Lip balms help create a barrier on the skin to prevent moisture loss and protect the lips from external irritants.
Step 5: Eyelash Serum and Eyebrow Serum
Don’t forget about your eyebrows and eyelashes! Apply a nourishing eyelash and eyebrow serum, such as Re/do Beauty's Eyelash Enhancing Serum and Eyebrow Enhancing Serum as the last step.
